Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a 4th grade teacher. Our school is mainly made up of Latino and Caucasian students. About 95% of the students are Latino, and they come from low income families.
This school uses the 90/10 model.
This means that the lower grades learn 90% in Spanish and 10% in English. As the students get older, they start to learn more English. By sixth grade, all students should be completely bilingual. Students in their last year will be taught using 50% English and 50% Spanish.
There is a big demand for enrollment and a huge waiting list. I want to mention that the parents of the students who attended last year were very satisfied with the school and the model we use. Most students are coming back, and kindergarten is completely full and has a long waiting list.
My Project
I am a 4th grade math teacher, and I teach 86 students. Learning math can be difficult and frustrating, but when students are learning in a cooperative way and using manipulatives, it becomes a real experience for them!
Using these hands on activities will help students internalize the concepts and understand better.
In fourth grade, we do multiplication, fractions, decimal and division problems.
In my class, we do cooperative learning. I'm purchasing various sets so that all the students partners in my class have a set for their own. I believe that with these materials, my students will be really successful this year and in their future.
More than a third of students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
