Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Thank you for considering this proposal! I am the teacher of 20 wonderful 1st Grade students at San Pedro St. Elementary School. The school is located in downtown Los Angeles, near the Garment District. It is a 4-Track K through 5 school. Our enrollment consists of 720 students, where 93.5% are English Language Learners and 100% are Socio-economically disadvantaged. During first grade, my students will be expected to read and write numerals to 100, to count objects to 100 or more, to compare and order whole numbers to 100 or more using a variety of methods including place value and the usage of the symbols <, =, and >, and the vocabulary of less than, equal to, and more than; they will be learning addition and subtraction; they will show a basic understanding of measuring lengths, weights, and capacity by selecting appropriate units to use for measurement; and, they will learn to tell time and to count money. They will learn to apply these lessons to real-life scenarios. In order to meet these expectations, our math curriculum should rely on many learning tools and it should cover all the math strands. The purchase of a collection that would include the essential resources for implementing an innovative Math curriculum would be powerful because my students would take mathematics more seriously when they know that their creative efforts will be enhanced, polished and preserved. This would include a complete set of Instant Math Centers, a Math Calendar Center, a Place Value and Number Operations Kit, that include sets for each student, and games to practice their math skills and assessment materials. My goal is to make math time as enjoyable as possible and I know that with your help we will be able to accomplish it. My students and I thank you for taking the time to read our proposal!
