Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are a vibrant bunch of boys and girls who just want to be able to learn just like everyone else. Their intellectual disabilities often prevent that from happening. They all have different backgrounds. My students are a mixture of nationalities, languages, and disabilities. This is part of what makes them special. What they have in common is trauma, poverty, and a desire to learn despite their disabilities. Most of these are not qualities they are proud of, but they deal with what they are given. The results are mixed, but their drive never stops.

My Project

My students have various special needs, and many perform at or below a kindergarten level despite being in 4th and 5th grade. Integrating math and reading is a fun way for them to learn! It helps for us to read about a concept, discuss what we read, and then move on to some hands on activities to help the concept become more concrete. This also helps students with different learning styles access the same information.

These books, in conjunction with hands on materials available in the classroom, can help my students soar in math!

The concepts are simple for many, but difficult for my students to understand. These books can help them see math in ways they hadn't seen it before. The books I have requested cover many mathematical topics that my students need to experience and master in 4th and 5th grade.
