My students need math manipulatives for the five strands of mathematics, such as Building Numbers Activity Kit, Simple Story Problem Boxes, Practicing Math Facts Stamps, and 20 Number Line Slider Boards.
I teach First Grade at a year-round, low-income and 99% minority school in NC. Every student in our school receives free or reduced breakfast and lunch. We are experiencing major budget cuts in NC and we do not have money for extras such as materials for hands on explorations and targeted learning skills.
Research shows that hands on activities are critical for students who struggle academically or behaviorally. My students need the socialization and academic skills that are lacking in many children who are economically deprived. Math is an area where students need time to explore the concepts and skills needed at this age. I have a 90 minute block set aside to teach the five strands of mathematics daily. Our class needs the hands on activities from the kits requested to have the time needed to get a good foundation in Number and Operations. This strand involves problem solving, counting, place value, and many more areas crucial to a firm foundation in Math.
The kits requested would enable my students to work in centers independently while I pull small groups of students to work on particular objectives that they need help with. All of the kits requested involve Numbers and Operations skills which I am teaching in my classroom. These kits would be used along with manipulatives we already have in our classroom. Using these kits along with counting manipulatives would give my students practice and the deeper understanding they need of the Numbers and Operations Strand of Mathematics to be successful in their academic careers.
I would absolutely love to have these resources to help my students practice the skills I am teaching in my Math Block. By helping my class with these items you will empower their minds to grow and reach even further than before to develop their knowledge and love of Mathematics! Please make this possible for my students.
