Math Organization for Mathematicians in the Making

My students need basic supplies such as binders, notebooks, folders, and glue sticks to keep them organized for math class.

My Students

My students are special because they are kind and compassionate. The students are eager to learn new things and generally like math, as long as we are not talking about fractions. They require a lot of direct and explicit instructions, extra copies of things, and several reminders of due dates.

My students are primarily African American, but I do have some Caucasian students as well.

We are a CEP school with 97% of the students eligible for free or reduced school lunch. My students have been through many transitions; some students have had to switch schools, many have had multiple teachers in a single school year; they are looking to build trust with an adult.

I live in the neighborhood, I serve. I live next door to some of my students. We are having some problems with gangs and crime, but I'm trying to ensure all students are given the opportunity to become good law abiding, tax paying citizens.

My Project

Being in an under resourced community, parents rarely purchase what students need to be successful. If they do, they will purchase economy or value materials that break easily during the school year. When students materials break or run out during the school year rarely do parents refill them, it falls to me as the teacher to make up the difference.

Without proper resources students become chronically disorganized, chronic disorganization leads to students not handing in work, misplacing important class notes, and eventually class failure.

My goal is to have an organization station where students whose parents did not purchase or run out of the correct materials can come and receive what they need to be successful. I want to have the resources to organize students' math journals and binders when notebook checks occur. I want to catch and fix disorganization before it becomes and epidemic.
