My Students
"If a child can't learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn"--Ignacio Estrada
Our school is a Title 1 school in Michigan.
Many of my students are English Language Learners who have immigrated to the United States. Over 94% of our student population qualifies for free or reduced price lunch. The combination of limited language and low income classifies my students as at-risk students. Despite all that, they are still children who have the desire to learn.
My Project
My students need bean bags, poly spots and a class set of rekenreks for additional math practice. Some of my students have yet to master some early math skills. Many of the kindergartners I see during the week did not go to preschool and therefore lack some of the basic early numeracy skills they need. I am requesting a class set of rekenreks as well as a large teacher rekenrek to help reinforce the concept of number sense. I am also requesting poly spots (enough to make a number line to 30) and bean bags. Since many of my students are young, they learn best through movement. What better way to learn about numbers than to walk or hop on a number line?
Through your donation, you will help to support my littlest learners!
The rekenreks, poly spots, and bean bags will be used to reinforce those early math skills that they will need as they move on to first grade. By moving and manipulating numbers, my students will have a better understanding of math.
