My Students
Understanding numbers is the key to understanding math for all your life. I want to build a solid understanding of number sense in my students.
I am teaching a kindergarten/first grade combination class for the first time this year.
I have 12 Ks and 12 first graders. They are bright and eager to learn and participate. I have 4 children who speak Spanish at home and several that receive free or reduced lunch. My new class of kids is the best. I love being with them every day and want them to make as much growth as possible this year.
My Project
As a combo class, I have my work cut out for me in math instruction. My students are at such different levels, that many different materials are required to make the most of our time together each day. To help my kindergarteners learn to count and work with numbers, I need a set of number mats that will allow them to manipulate and understand how numbers work. We will use these mats to help us learn to count forward and backward, make bigger and smaller numbers, and eventually understand place value. For my first graders, I need some Hot Dots electronic practice and review cards that they can use in centers and with parent volunteers.
This project is important to me and my students because we have a big job ahead of us.
I have less than 180 days to get them as far as I can in all subject areas. These materials will help us practice skills and learn new ones toward that goal. I want my class to love to come to school, and one way to get that to happen is by offering games as practice rather than pencil/paper activities.
