My students need math games, books, and manipulatives to help them understand math concepts including fractions and geometry. They also need to review previously learned concepts.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Have you ever had an Ah-Ha moment after physically being able to interact with a previously abstract concept? That is how my students are with math. Many of the ways we use math everyday are outside of their grasp. Providing them with manipulatives helps them to take ownership over their learning!
The 6th grade in which I teach Math is in Arizona.
As AZ is a state that seems to not take education seriously and back it financially, my students suffer. My students live in a low socioeconomic area, with nearly all of my students on free and reduced lunch. Some of my students are even considered homeless by the McKinney-Vento act. That means that parents/guardians don't have the financial means to help out. These students have been passed along year to year without understanding the basic math concepts. They have reached me at 6th grade with extreme deficits in their ability to perform basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. I'm working with the students and any other resources I can get my hands on to help them grasp these concepts that have been outside of their reach. I've purchased some materials on my own, but I'm a 1st year teacher paying off student loans and not making much at all puts a limit on how much I can personally do, so I am asking for your help!
My Project
I'm asking for a mathematics review book, fraction kids so that the students can get a hands on feel for how the fractions relate to one another. With class time being a precious resource that I never have enough of, asking the students to create their own fraction kits would be too time consuming. I am also requesting a class set of Geoboards with a teacher's manual. Discovering geometric principals such as area, perimeter and circumference becomes much more understandable and easier to remember if students discover these concepts through their own inquiry.
Students who gain an understanding in math do better in other subjects as well.
Math is related to everything we do, every job and career has math involved in some way. I want my students to be able to take ownership over their futures by having a basic understanding of math!
