This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember when you finally understood a math concept? My students are having difficulties understanding math concepts because they are not able to physically touch and manipulate the concepts. Providing them with hands-on materials helps cement the concepts they will need to succeed!
My students attend a Title 1 school, and many are on free or reduced lunch.
In Arizona, education funding is consistently cut back leaving teachers and parents responsible for providing many items. I do my best to provide for my students, but am limited in my ability to do this by the same system that cuts funding for the students.
My Project
21st century learners need to be math and science minded. Helping my students gain an understanding of 6th grade math concepts through discovery and application helps strengthen the foundation that is necessary for future grades to build upon. If students don't have a strong foundation to build upon, they will not be able to succeed in the future. My students need rulers, protractors & cubes to help with measurement & volume. Equate helps them pracitce basic facts. Bridges builds math concepts through application.
Many of the math and science jobs in the United States are going to outside applicants because American children do not have the foundation necessary to succeed in these jobs.
By helping students understand the concepts and build stronger math foundations, we can change this outcome!
