Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have been a first-grade teacher in a city school in Illinois for over fifteen years. My students live in low-income households from a beautifully diverse area of Chicago. Hispanic, African-American, and Arab families send their children to our school. Many of my students are bilingual and are raised in homes with single parents, multiple siblings and/or grandparents.
My classroom is filled with students who are alive with curiosity.
I embrace this energy by using a workshop model during reading and math. The students work with partners, work independently on concepts at their level, use technology, and work with me in small groups. One of the most gratifying aspects of this model is watching the students take ownership of their learning and become confident students at such a young age.
My Project
These items will enhance the hands-on math environment that I offer to my students. During Math Workshop, my students currently rotate among stations that include an interactive journal, math fact games, technology, math tubs, and small group time with the teacher. The materials that I am requesting will be among the math tub materials. This station is a place for students to gain a deeper understanding of the concepts through the play. My six and seven year old students will complete addition puzzles, compare height through a measurement game, gain a deeper knowledge of quantity in the Monkey Math game, and build 3D structures with the AngLegs set.
