This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Is math a foreign language to you? To my budding first graders, math can be very difficult to tackle. I have only one hour each day devoted to math. My students need to master common core standards but need the support through hands-on tools.
My school is situated in a low income neighborhood.
Many students struggle with the English language and for some, this is their first opportunity in a school setting. The parents, school community, and I work together to support students' growth and learning.
My Project
Everyday, I struggle to implement lessons for my English Language Learners, especially those who don't speak a word of English. With the magnetic learning numbers, a magnetic teaching clock, magnetic place value blocks, magnetic design shapes and number line slider boards requested, I hope to show students math concepts rather than talk about it. Math should be interactive. I want students to be able to master number sense with the magnetic learning numbers, practice addition and subtraction by hopping on their own number line, and navigate other concepts. They need to hold and play with math tools to really demonstrate proficiency.
Your donations will make math more interactive and engaging.
My hope is also for students to retain the math skills. As a teacher, I want role play the concept with the large magnetic objects and give students the opportunity to manipulate the tools themselves.
