This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
The best and easiest way to describe my students is that they are survivors. My class is a dual language kindergarten classroom, and I am charged with teaching them Spanish language arts and math. I will have two classes, each consisting of 21 highly motivated and fully charged five-year-olds. My children and their families have been hit hard by Hurricane Harvey. Many of my families had to be evacuated, and our school sustained a lot of damage. We are teaching at a relocation site with the basics. We couldn't ask our parents for any type of supply after what they went through. My kids are ready to be back at their school, but we need some Math materials and storage in order to feel complete. We hope to be back at our school soon and these items would help my students adjust to yet another move.
My Project
We have had a difficult start to the school year with the Hurricane and moving to a relocation site. I am in charge of teaching Math as part of the Dual Language program and it is very important to have the manipulatives to do it. Harvey destroyed many of my materials from my 21 years of teaching. To add to the stress of teaching this subject, I was moved to a different grade level. My class is in need of a variety of Math materials in order to teach both my classes. The instant learning centers, self inking stamps, giant number tracers, Math activity tins, and other materials will be housed at the Math workstation and used as a concept is taught. The giant ten frame, giant magnetic money, magnetic Rekenrek, jumbo magnetic ten frame, magnetic number line, and magnetic visual models chart will be used during whole group instruction. I hope that with the larger versions of what the students use in class it will help in my instruction. The ten frame and number line answer boards will be used during small group instruction. The storage shelf and bins will help me house all the materials in the classroom. The students will have easy access to the materials and be able to clean after themselves with ease.
If we get funded, my class will not only have the best math workstation but we will have the smartest mathematicians in the whole school.
