This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Nope, I read that one."
"What about this one?"
"I liked that one. It was good."
"How about this one?"
"Miss, I think I read all the books."
"Uh-oh."
My students love to read.
They are voracious consumers of all printed material. Unfortunately, they have consumed all of the math books in my library! Allowing them to read math books after a math test allows me to give extended time to students who need it without wasting valuable learning time for my more advanced students. They adore reading and quizzing on their books after they finish the test (only after they have checked the test 3 times, or until "their eyes fall out, their toes curl up and their fingers start to bleed!" which ensures that they have actually checked their work!). Having math books in the classroom provides me with resources that allow them to explore new math concepts or present familiar concepts in a new and engaging manner, one which may last with them longer than the lesson I am providing.
My Project
However, not only have my students read practically every book in my math collection, many of them have advanced in reading so much that these books are now well below their reading level! And we can't have that! My students long for books that challenge them, and easy books are just not that engaging to them. They are very proud of the growth they have made in reading and they want to show off the level of books that they are reading. Getting books on higher levels will allow me to encourage them to keep reading and provide them with valuable resources to expand their vocabulary, number sense, and reading ability.
Your exceedingly generous donation will help satiate my students' hunger for knowledge!
You will be providing them with hours of reading material, motivation for finishing their tests well, and resources to expand their knowledge about math concepts. With your help, my class will be able to explore new areas of math and literature!
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
