Imagine a classroom where students are busy engaged with a variety of Math manipulatives during center time. Can you picture it? The quiet hum of excited voices discussing various Math concepts, then later applying what they've learn to real-life situations.
This year, I have 30 Kindergarten students, who attend school year-round with an extended-day program, Monday through Friday from 8:00 A.M.
to 5:00 P.M. Although 92% of the students come from low-income households, we try to provide every opportunity for them to learn and excel. Within our class, we have a variety of learners, including kinesthetic, tactile, and visual learners. These students enjoy engaging in hands-on activities to learn mathematics and fulfill the Illinois standards, as well as their curiosities about mathematical concepts.
My Project
I use the Everyday Math curriculum; so, it is important to have a variety of Math manipulatives for students to use to be actively engaged with learning concepts covered. I prefer to use Math learning centers so that students can learn in a cooperative learning environment; however, we have limited supplies to fulfill this need.
With your help, my students will have the opportunity to use hands-on Math games, clocks, hands-on addition, sorting and pattern centers, geometric shapes, and fraction circles to make learning Math more fun and engaging.
Your help will ensure that my students realize how important it is to learn Math concepts, such as time, money, and number sense, yet with an exciting spin to it.
