My students need math manipulatives such as interactive clocks, 3D shape models, pattern blocks, ten-frames, color tiles, and counters in order to master the math concepts and standards taught in first grade.

My Students
"Show me and I forget.
Teach me and I remember.
Involve me and I learn."
Benjamin Franklin
It is always my goal to put the responsibility and ownership of learning on my students. I show them and I teach them, but when I give them the opportunity to be involved in their content they truly learn.
I will have first grade students this coming school year.
I am excited to learn and grow with them as I begin my first full year of teaching and as they continue to build upon their skills from kindergarten. I love that as an adult and as their teacher, I get to model for them that learning never ends as we learn together this coming year.
My Project
Math concepts can be very abstract for many first graders without utilizing proper tools. Tools make math concepts tangible and engaging. I have to make learning concrete for my students to be successful in their math content and skills. My students need math manipulatives such as interactive clocks, 3D shape models, pattern blocks, ten-frames, color tiles, and counters. These resources will be used to introduce concepts as we are learning new math skills and as we continue to practice previous skills. We will use the counters and fact family triangle to practice addition and subtraction, a skill that we will work on all year long. Many of these resources will be available in our math center tubs for students to use for creative play as they finish activities or during indoor recess. Many of these resources have an abundance of uses. Because these resources are so incredibly versatile, they will be useful throughout the year and not just during a specific unit.
These tools and resources would double our selection of hands on materials for math concepts.
Students can become frustration very easily with math concepts if the skill is not presented and practiced using tangible tools. Having a variety of resources is key to making sure every student has what they need to be success in math. Learning math concepts should be fun, not frustrating. These resources will make that possible.
