Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are a diverse group of learners and care about each other as a true class family. Students come together to support each other in all that they do. They are caring and compassionate and love to learn.
Our class is predominantly low income students.
Almost 50% are English Language Learners from all different countries. There are many refugees in our school and other students with challenging backgrounds. Nevertheless, the students are hard workers and dedicated to learning. We are a close-knit family of teachers and learners.
My Project
My students have misconceptions about geometry. It is very difficult to find manipulatives that are hands on and demonstrate the qualities of geometric forms that are irregular. Students are then surprised when an eight sided shape that is irregular is called an octagon as well as the one that they are used to seeing. My students also need ten frames to build their number sense. These ten frames are large, and perfect to work with in small groups.
With these manipulatives, my students' math knowledge will grow.
They will have hands on learning and be able to then transfer that to paper and ideas.
More than three‑quarters of students from low‑income households
