My Project
Math becomes exponentially more complicated in 6th grade. Students who come to 6th grade without strong number sense are easily overwhelmed by the complex skills they need to learn. Having more tools available to help students understand will allow them to fully grasp concepts more quickly. Manipulatives also help students understand the application of these new skills - a gap that is very common in 6th grade!
Big kids learn better with manipulatives, too!
It's common to see math manipulatives in primary classrooms, but those same manipulatives are often not present in middle grades. Manipulatives help students learn by giving them a tactile way to understand the math. (They also make math more fun by adding the novelty of a new tool!
The manipulatives in this project will help students with MANY 6th grade math standards, including but not limited to:
* Understanding and converting between fractions, decimals, and percentages
* Probability and statistics
* Finding area of triangles and special polygons by decomposing
* Expressions and equations using a single variable
* Plotting points in a coordinate plane
* Drawing polygons in a coordinate plane
* Understand that positive and negative numbers have opposite directions or values
