Help me give my students manipulatives to help support their mathematical understanding of concepts like fractions, geometry and more. Hands on activities assist students in learning by making abstract ideas concrete and increase student participation.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Manipulatives serve to assist students in understanding math concepts by offering a way to check your work and build reasoning skills. Having physical hands-on objects aids in making abstract ideas concrete. They promote student engagement and boost their confidence. The handheld dry erase boards can be used for any activity done in the classroom. Students can use them to practice their work and answer questions. While yes students can raise their hands, it provides another form of engagement in which they can easily answer questions during fast passed lesson-based activities or games. Additional markers and erasers are added as these markers tend to run out quickly. Buying separate erasers will prevent students from using their hands to erase the ink off the boards
While some manipulatives may look like toys, they are helpful tools to comprehend concepts such as fractions, decimals, geometry, place value, addition, and multiplication.
Magnetic tiles and pattern blocks can be used as a great tool in understanding geometry. Using these 2-dimensional tiles, students can construct three-dimensional shapes. This can help them understand shapes and their properties. The snap cubes and base ten block will be used to help students with basic mathematical functions and place value. Fractions can be a hard concept for students to grasp. With the fraction tiles and the conversion flip chart, I hope to provide the students with multiple opportunities to become familiar and comfortable with the concept. Finally, this year we will also be learning about coordinate and line graphs. Graphing paper is necessary for students to be able to work on possible problems that will inevitably arise.
