This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My classroom is located in Washington state at a Title I school. Students at my school are hardworking, kind, eager individuals. Many students are first and second-generation citizens from Africa, South America, North America, and Asia. About forty-two percent of students qualify for English Language Learner services, and up to fifty percent of students speak a language other than English in the home. Our differing cultures, backgrounds, economic statuses, and languages provide richness in the classroom. However, we also face challenges. One challenge is that we are incredibly underfunded.

There are so many learning opportunities I wish I could have with my students if only I had the means.

My Project

There have been several studies that show how effective manipulatives have been in increasing mathematics achievement.

Before students can really understand mathematical concepts deeply they must actually experience or "do" the situation; manipulatives make the "doing" possible.

Manipulatives help students learn by allowing them to move from using concrete materials to deeper abstract thinking. Manipulatives have been found to help with verbalizing mathematical thinking, discuss mathematical ideas and concepts, relating real-world situations to math, and to work collaboratively.

Please help put manipulatives into the hands of my students. The manipulatives I'm asking for are dice and magnet base 10 blocks.

I am also asking for visuals for the classroom. By having large visuals students can see the math they're engaging in rather than just working abstractly. The visuals I am asking for are a large magnetic number line and multipliction flash cards that not only have an equation but also what that equation means in visual form. The number line can help students with addition, subtraction, and counting. Thank you in advance for your support.
