Children need a solid understanding of number sense before they can add and subtract within twenty. Rekenreks are manipulatives that help students form this understanding and become math savvy. I already have a large teacher Rekenrek and it would be so helpful for the students to have their own so they can experience moving the beads around themselves.
In addition to individual Rekenreks, I also want to help my students learn to tie their shoes at the beginning of the year.
They often come to first grade not knowing this important life skill. The wooden shoes will be helpful for demonstrating and practicing and the actual laces will be perfect for rewards once the goal is accomplished.
