Math Manipulatives and Other Tools to Help With Special Needs

My Students
My school is an IB School that believes in teaching children to think critically, act responsibly and communicate effectively. We, as educators, believe that teaching these things are important in order to create globally minded, balanced and well adjusted citizens of tomorrow.
Within my classroom, I have quite a few student who have learning disabilities, anxiety, and lack the ability to focus in order to complete their work.
They have a desire to learn, but they are in need of different things to help them concentrate and focus.
My classroom is full of students who are eager to learn most things. However, when it comes to math I feel as though they lack interest. A lot of them don't understand the basic concepts and have a difficult time understanding why we need to study it. I believe having hands on tools will help them make sense of these math concepts.
My Project
The stand up desks will help my students who have a difficult time sitting for long periods of time. It will allow them to stand while still paying attention and not distracting others in the classroom. Fidgets will help those students who need be moving their hands in order to focus.
Since math is a difficult subject for my students, I believe that it is really important to show them that math can be fun!
The math manipulatives will help students grasp difficult math concepts by giving them a hands on experience. Students will be able to physically measure things, discover volume with the different cubes, as well as perimeter and area with the different shapes. Dominos will help my special needs kids with their numbers while allowing them to play games with my other students, thus helping them feel integrated within the classroom. These are just a few of the many activities we will do in our class.
All students love picture books and many activities can be done alongside these math picture books. They offer a fun introduction to different math concepts that go along with the 5th grade curriculum. I believe that by making math fun for my students, they will ultimately have a strong foundation that will continue into middle school.
