This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I could not be happier than to begin my teaching career in a bilingual second grade classroom. My students are inquisitive, caring, and dedicated to their education. They are proud of being bilingual and excited about what their future holds. Some want to be police officers. Others want to be teachers. The students' families struggle economically, yet consistently prioritize their children's education.
In this class, we build a community around valuing each person's experiences and languages.
My students passionately write about topics anywhere from Roblox to chameleons to Salvadorean food. Some of my students are reading at high levels of English and Spanish, while others have very little time in this country and are still practicing their ABCs. All enjoy singing along as I play my ukulele, dancing together, and playing math games. They are truly an incredible group! I look forward to our continued growth together.
My Project
My students are in need of new math manipulatives for their in-person learning! During the first half of the school year, my class was completely online. In order to support and spark their learning as much as possible, I sent home packages full of math manipulatives, including 100s charts, fake coins, playing cards, whiteboards, and whiteboard markers. This truly aided in my students' learning as we discovered new ways to play cards as well as other math games through the screen.
When my students returned with their math materials for in-person learning, the aftermath of the inevitable wear and tear became evident.
Some students returned with bent up and jagged hundreds' charts, others with some of the fake coins replaced with real coins. Naturally, a few students mentioned that their little brother or sister had gotten his or her hands on the materials. To this day they use these materials daily. They are integral to their math learning and honestly make it much more fun. Therefore, it is definitely time for some replacements. Please consider donating to this project in order to make sure that these students continue to have access to these key math tools.
