My students show great resilience and tenacity. I teach middle school students that have been diagnosed with Learning Disabilities. Most of my students have been diagnosed with a learning disability in earlier grades. When they reach middle school, they know that they learn differently so my goal is to empower students to become their own advocates. I love to see them tell their teachers what they need to be successful in their classrooms.
I also focus on helping my students set post-secondary goals for themselves.
When students envision their futures, they tend to be more motivated to earn passing grades in all subjects areas, so the transition to high school as a student with a disability is more exciting.
My Project
As we prepare to return to on site schooling again, both teacher and student are getting ready to enter into a new challenge. We are challenged to make up for the academic loss due to the pandemic. Schools are initiating small group instruction to deal with students academic deficits.
To prepare for the upcoming school year, I will like to offer my students math manipulative to be used during small group instruction.
I envision that students will be able to independently engage in math lessons while allowing me to circulate to each group and meet the students individual needs. This is differentiation at its best.
