This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Let's face it math can be a scary subject to learn. My students have difficulty understand certain math concepts and paper and pencil activities are not helping. They need practice with trying out new strategies by using manipulatives to fully understand how to solve math problems.
My students are third graders at a school located in the Bronx.
Most of my students are visual learners and become engaged when the lesson involves hands-on activities or manipulatives. I find that with my students, one of the most challenging subjects to teach is math. They can get easily frustrated when they have to solve word problems and have extreme difficulty explaining the strategies they used and figuring out the answer. I have noticed that my students do better when they get opportunities to try out several strategies and work together to explain their thinking. Students also understand math concepts when they are given the chance to use it in a variety of ways, such as games, real-life scenarios and word problems that are relatable to their world. My students also need to work on building their math vocabulary to better understand what they are being asked to do when solving word problems.
My Project
The wipe-off materials will enable students to show their work on wipe-off boards and try out different strategies that are being taught during the lesson. This will also give me an opportunity to see who understands the concept being taught and who needs further scaffolding. The analog clock will give students a hands-on approach on telling time, showing elapsed time and solving word problems regarding time. The dice can be used for different math fast facts games, such as rolling the dice to compare place value, to add, subtract, and multiply one or two digit numbers. The clear plastic covers will help preserve math games in which students can write on using wipe-off markers and can be used throughout the year without fear of being destroyed.
The donations to this project will help students gain a deeper understanding of math concepts and skills.
Students will have an opportunity to show their work and try out different strategies that can be used to solve math problems. Students will be eager to play math games and using different materials to learn math versus just pencil and paper activities. Students need all the scaffolding they can get to fully understand this often tricky and scary subject area.
