My Project
I work with a very diverse population of students ranging form kindergarten to grade five everyday. My classroom is a mobile classroom with a deck and ramp. We have turned the area inside the ramp into a reading garden for kids to find joy in reading in different places, especially nature. This has been so successful that the students have asked to expand to math. So far, we have only been able to bring clipboards out with work on it, but we want to do better.
"Math is not only seen as beautiful—beauty is also mathematical," says Dr. Thomas Britz, a lecturer in UNSW Science's School of Mathematics & Statistics.
"The two are intertwined."
By using the turf to define the spaces, we can bring math games with large Jenga-like blocks outside to explore math concepts along with board games, and manipulatives. The convenient train case will keep the items organized by grade level appropriateness, so I only take out the needed sections for that period, and keeps the manipulatives neat and organized into sections. The portability of the lightweight cart will assist in usability because it will be 'ready to roll'.
