Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students come from low income, hard-working families. Some have just arrived to the US from refugee camps from Syria, Somalia, and Thailand. In my 2nd grade class I have reading levels that span from letter/sound recognition for my English Learners and struggling readers to third grade level readers. However, no matter their skill level, they are ready to try and work hard each day!
They always make me smile, and I love watching them grow as learners!
We also spend a lot of time building a sense of community in our classroom. We learn that making mistakes is okay, but it's not okay to not try. This is a lesson that the students take to heart, and one that sticks with them all year, and hopefully throughout their lives!
My Project
Math is one area where skills continuously build on each other. Having a chance to have daily number talks will help reinforce the skills that my students need to use on a daily basis.
Number talks help students learn how to communicate about math.
They're able to show what they did, and explain why. This also helps them build confidence as mathematicians and begin to use a variety of strategies to solve a problem.
Number talks are a great time to let students be in charge of their learning. They take ownership, and are able to share their ideas as well as learn from eachother.
