My Project
My 4th-grade students are diving into the world of money, decimals, and real-world math—and what better way to make it meaningful than by designing and building their very own piggy banks!
In this project, students will apply their knowledge of place value, addition, subtraction, and decimals as they plan and construct a functional piggy bank using recycled materials like large water bottles, craft supplies, and basic tools.
They'll also set a personal savings goal, calculate how much they need, and create a written plan showing how they’ll reach that goal using their math skills.
This hands-on activity not only reinforces academic standards in a creative way but also builds financial literacy, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills. Students will take ownership of their learning and gain a deeper understanding of how math connects to everyday life.
