My students need magnetic numbers and counters, write and wipe boards, ten frame trains and number stamps to help them practice their counting and grouping skills in a hands-on manner during small group instruction.

My Students
The students in my classroom are part of the largest elementary school in our district. Most come from single income, multi generational homes where they are often not exposed to literacy and math concepts before starting kindergarten. Poverty is high with approximately seventy percent of our students are on free or reduced price lunches. The two schools that were combined to create this school were completely destroyed in the 2011 F-5 tornado, with the majority of our students losing their homes. School is their "safe place".
My kiddos are excited about learning, inquisitive, knowledge seeking and questioning every minute of every day.
They seek the when, the why and especially the how continually, and I try my best to satisfy that curiosity.
My Project
I have been teaching reading in small differentiated groups for years. This year I decided to start teaching math in small groups as well, allowing students to work on what skills they need to succeed. My students' needs vary from learning basic number sense such as counting and creating groups from 1 to 10 to knowing addition and subtraction.
These materials will allow my students to work on their need specific skills in a small group setting.
My lower group can use the magnetic white boards, magnetic numbers and counters and number stamps to help build their number sense while another group can work on composing and decomposing teen numbers using the number trains. My highest groups can use the Snap and Slide number bonds to help with addition and subtraction skills.
Once we have used these materials in small group, they could be moved to an independent learning station so that the students can continue to practice what we have learned in groups.
