My Students
First graders have a love for learning that cannot be contained. They enter first grade feeling more grown-up and full of the accomplishment of conquering kindergarten. This excitement soon leads to frustration if classroom materials don't support this enthusiastic curiosity,'
Inner city school budgets continues to fall short.
It's difficult to keep students engageded with limited classroom materials. My parents contribute what they can, but they struggle to provide the basic necessities for their children. Amazingly my students arrive with excitement for the new school year and no evidence of their struggles on their faces. They know that school is the key to achieving their dreams.
My Project
My students meet daily in small groups and continue their learning at math work stations. The fluency puzzles will provide the practice needed to answer math facts accurately and without hesitation. Daily individualized practice with self-checking practice cards will increase their number sense and problem solving skills. First graders love to teach each other. Math puzzles will allow them to support each other in their learning. They will be able to work together, solve math problems and learn how to get along.
With this daily practice my first graders will build the necessary skills needed for second grade and beyond.
