My Project

I have a diverse group of learners at my school who deserve the very best education. Providing students with concrete materials, that they can touch and manipulate, is crucial to their math learning. While some materials have been successful for students, we are in need of non-traditional materials that allow for a focus on sensory and manipulation. My students are often not ready to think abstractly about math and are often unable to represent numbers and operations visually. Having sensory materials, that encourage learning, will bridge this gap for students.

Students learn math best when holding math in their hands.

I believe that all students can excel in computing and building a sense of numbers when they are given ample opportunity to manipulate and build the numbers with concrete materials. Tracing in sand, building with pegs, tracing on wood, counting with beads and building hundreds charts will be excellent tools for my students. Students will see connections between the materials they are using and the models on paper.

My students often do not have the materials to learn at home. It is critical that they experience building and manipulating at school.
