Math Made Fun Through Games

My students need math games to make our math workshop fun and engaging. They need clear stackable containers to keep all these games organized and easily accessible.

My Students

My students are so inquisitive. These culturally diverse mid-west second graders attend a school that is around 80% free and reduced lunch yet they try so hard every day to do their best. Even though my homeroom is only 21 students the staff collaborates and shares students so I see every second grader in our building. It makes our small neighborhood school very tight nit.

We do a great job of making due with what we have despite lack of funding, parental involvement in school, & budget constraints.

Right now we are a class of energetic students which is split quite evenly half boys and half girls. These students happily work with whatever supplies we have. Our goal is to provide them with what we can and make their learning relevant and personal every day.

My Project

I love math and I want my students to love math. My passion gets them excited about it each day. We do an hour of math workshop where they learn from a whole class mini-lesson then break out into stations to apply their learning. Students are playing games while I work with a small group. Right now a lot of our games are made from paper so they don't last or supplies fall out of the ziplock bags. We need a better solution.

Math can be frustrating sometimes so let's take discouraging factors away by having engaging, relevant, personalized games in easy to use containers.

To make the focus stay on learning math in a fun way, our second graders need clear easy stack containers to store all of our games in so it is easy to rotate them throughout the year based on our learning. The size is large enough to let papers lay flat and deep enough to hold needed manipulatives.

Some of the fun games we picked out are Sums in Space and Sum Swamp which are similar to classic board games you love like Candyland but focus on addition. Cloud Hopper is an exciting game that can use both addition and subtraction so it allows for quick differentiation. The game I Sea 10 is an aquatic themed game that helps students increase fluency in making 10 which is a foundational skill for many of the addition strategies we use. These games will allow the stations to be shared among the second-grade teachers, rotate the topics more often which increases novelty and allows us to take better care of the resources we have because latching lids prevent supplies from going missing. We love math time and want to make it even better!
