Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students thirst for learning. They love hands-on activities. I have spent 10 years teaching 1st and 2nd grades, and am moving to 4th grade now. I have very limited resources beyond 2nd grade.
My students need to have the same opportunities to be successful in their learning.
My students need money manipulatives, including plastic coins and paper money, math games such as Math Plinko, and Quick Pick activities to reinforce math skills which offer a variety of hands-on, engaging activities. They also need markers and write and wipe pockets.
My students come from very high poverty areas.
Many families speak no English at all, and my students are the only ones in their family that speak English. 100% of my school is free lunch. Our school has 900 students encompassing ethnic backgrounds of African American, Puerto Rican, Mexican, Hmong, Caucasion and Hispanic/Latino.
My students thirst for learning. Many of them teach their parents. Having activities such as these, will keep them engaged and motivated to learn the math skills they need to be successful.
My Project
My students will be using these activities almost on a daily basis. They will be using them during every day math lessons to reinforce skills or to even re-teach them. Students will be working in stations in small groups to complete activities. This is a great way to help progress monitor the kids, too.
The board games for example, can be displayed using the document camera. We could play them as a whole class this way! They then will be put into stations for reinforcing skills.
We will be using the coins and paper money to reinforce counting money. Students will also have the opportunity to earn "money" and buy things from the classroom store. They will need to figure out how much they need and if change will be given and how much.
They'll be engaged and learning and have a variety of activities to choose from each rotation.
It's important for students to be actively engaged.
Their level of motivation is important because the less motivated they are to learn, the harder it will be for them to concentrate and to learn the necessary skills.
I feel these activities will keep them highly engaged and motivated because they're fun and students can work together to help one another.
