Math Literature for Math Learners

My students need math literature such as "Math Matters," "Math Start," "Full House," and "Math in Our World" to introduce them to math concepts and to show them how math is used in the real world.

My Students

"What does this have to do with anything that I am ever going to use in my real life?" This is a question that many of us, including my students, think of during math time! My students need help realizing that what they learn in math today is important to their future and why!

My students are a wonderful group of fourth graders!

They are students that come from a number of cultural backgrounds, religions, and have differing family units. They all work to follow our school's 3 R's policy. Under the 3 R's, students show that they are respectful, ready, and responsible. This year a number of the students began selling bracelets which they made and designed at our school store. The profits were given to a cancer foundation. Currently my students are creating heart designed artwork and stickers they have made and are being sold during their lunch time. The profits for this project are being donated to a children's hospital. My students have big hearts and know that to be educated you need to have knowledge and character!

My Project

The math literature I am requesting would be such a wonderful resource to our classroom. I think, too often, students are taught math skills with no connection to how the skills are applied and used in our real life setting. The math literature helps students to grasp what concepts mean beyond just memorization. Having background knowledge on the math skills students will be working on will help them to understand that although they may not always realize it, math is used daily in their world. The books I have requested show math used in these every day settings. My students need math literature such as "Math Matters," "Math Start," "Full House," and "Math in Our World" to introduce them to math concepts and to show them how math is used in the real world.

This project means a lot to me, because I want students to understand that what they are learning in school is not just a "right now knowledge"; it is "life now knowledge".

Our town's budget has been cut and cut and cut. We have lost staff, funding, and have not been able to buy all the materials we always need or want. This project would truly help promote math awareness with my students.
