My Students

Each year we have more and more students who have families struggling to make it and who often have to move in with relatives after a job loss. Many also come from military families. The students at our school really want to make good choices and we have a staff that is working to help guide students. Our staff continually goes above and beyond to help their students. The school is based on the idea that we are all part of the same team, and we work towards helping all students. Almost 100 percent of certified staff work as mentors during their personal time to give students who need extra help the attention they need, whether it is an academic or a personal need. We are working hard to make sure our students are prepared for the future. We have added a MakerSpace and are now working to start STEAM clubs.

My Project

Parents are often an untapped resource in the education process. As cited in the article "Parent Involvement in Education" by Kathleen Cotton and Karen Reed Wiklund , "The research overwhelmingly demonstrates that parent involvement in children's learning is positively related to achievement. Further, the research shows that the more intensively parents are involved in their children's learning, the more beneficial are the achievement effects."

We want to partner with parents to help students who are struggling to master math concepts.

Parents often feel inadequate to help their students in math, which affects how the student feels about math. By providing take home bags for math practice, along with easy to follow directions and opportunities for parents to learn how to teach the skills, we plan on increasing our students math literacy.

We have math nights each year where students and parents go to various stations and learn how to play math games and use math materials to strengthen math concepts. Handouts are available for parents to take home to do activities at home.

This project will allow us to set up take home bags for the students needing math interventions. These bags will have the materials and instructions in them to work on a math concept the student is struggling with. The student will take the bag home and do the activities with their parents. In the bag will be instructions on how long to keep the bag and which activities to do. Once all the activities have been completed, the student will return that bag and exchange it for another bag. Some of the materials include base 10 blocks, clocks for telling time, fraction and decimal materials, place value sets, and counters.

We are excited to see our students and parents learning together.
