Our school is an AWESOME school located in Southwest Atlanta in a quiet community that consists of low income and impoverished families. We are located in a low income neighborhood and 100% of our students participate in the Free/Reduced Lunch Program. Our students are eager to learn yet our Georgia Milestones Assessment does not reflect the true nature of their abilities. Any opportunities for them to excel in the required standards is utilized especially when a competition is the format.
Last year was the first year our 4th and 5th Graders participated in the Math League contest and from then on they have been eager to participate again. Participating in the Math League Contest promotes enjoyment and to enrich mathematics programs. Each contest covers topics appropriate to the contest grade level. Our well-written questions cover a variety of difficulty ranges and involve topics of interest to above-average students. Our students enjoy a challenge and learn from it to find problem-solving discussions stimulating. This challenge is what prompts many youngsters to enjoy puzzle books! Our students not only need challenging opportunities, but also need engaging opportunities to practice the content of their grade level standards so that they may make a "Proficient Learner" rating on the Georgia Milestones. Our hope through the participation in the Math League Contest is actually that will earn a "Distinguished Learner" on the standardized test proving that they are excelling in the standards. Involvement in the Math League Contest will give them consistent practice and challenging engagement so that they can make those ratings. Since these students will be participating after school, the healthy snacks we are requesting fuel them up for active engagement
