Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"No employment can be managed without arithmetic, no mechanical invention without geometry." Benjamin Franklin
My math goal for the year is to make as many connections between math and my students' everyday life as possible. I want them to approach math problems with perseverance and academic rigor.
I work in a low socioeconomic area.
My students don't have a lot of out of school opportunities to experience the world outside of their immediate community.
My students (past, present and (I hope) future) are curious about the world. I love their enthusiasm and perseverance. Their constant wonder never ceases to amaze me.
My Project
My students will use the resources by engaging in interactive and fun activities, without even knowing that they are strengthening their understanding of math!!! It's similar to sneaking vegetables into the macaroni and cheese! It's fun AND educational! Since the multiplication ante is raised dramatically in 5th from 4th, I will use the dice to engage the students in various multiplication and division activities.
This year we made the transition to Common Core. The resource book will help me use CC specific activities to guide the students toward mastery. I have a small collection of 4 or 5 of math card games that I teach the students (mac and cheese with vegetable?) I can't wait to get my hands on this book to strengthen their further understanding of math concepts!!! Just thinking about it makes me smile!!!
Funding this project will make a huge difference in my classroom.
The dice and the card game book are one way for for students with different learning modalities to engage in alternative learning activities. I know first hand that students that have plenty of opportunity to practice new or reviewed skills in many different ways retain more information.
