This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"What did you learn in school today?" Instead of simply telling their families what they learned in school, I want my students to be able to SHOW what they know while practicing critical math and reading skills with a family member.
I teach in an urban community in northern Illinois.
All of my students receive free or reduced lunch, and over half are English Language Learners. Very few of my students have even a single book at home to share with their loved ones, or other educational materials like flash cards or math tools.
Many parents want to get involved in their child's schooling, but they are not sure how. To help improve reading at home, I have invested a great deal of time and resources to make take home literacy bags. These literacy bags are well-loved by my students, who cherish the opportunity to share books with their family members. The literacy bag program has been such a success and has given families opportunities to get involved in each child's learning. Why not extend this program to include math packs with games and related books on key math topics?
My Project
With your donation of math games and books, my students will have meaningful, structured math extension activities to complete with a family member. Each problem solving book features questions that can be solved using the included manipulatives and wipe-off markers. These cards are self-checking, meaning that students and parents can ensure the answers are correct together. Each math pack will also include one or two books for families and students to read together. These books teach about each math topic in a fun, literature-based way.
By pairing a game with a related book, students and families will be provided with engaging and exciting tools to practice critical math skills and to boost family literacy. When more children check out these math packs, more families can read and explore math together and truly make literacy and learning a family event. The list of benefits goes on and on!
Your support of this project will change the lives of my students and their families.
You will make it possible for my students to enjoy high-quality books and math games at home and share their love of reading and math with their families.
