My Students

Ever seen the excitement of a child when they are on the computer or playing video games? This excitement can occur daily in the classroom with the technology that exists today. Help bring us into the 21st century with the addition of technology that will impact our classroom for years to come.

My students are middle school students in grades five through eight who receive mathematics instruction in a special education classroom.

They are from a major urban area in the state of Illinois. The school has become a hub for learning and is shattering the stereotypes of young, black urban youth. They work so hard every day and have been making incredible growth in mathematics as displayed by the school data.

My Project

I am requesting math journals so that students have a place to write notes and document their mathematical thinking and problem solving in a unique place. Students in my class experience difficulty with being able to stay organized and maintain their notes in an orderly manner that can be used for future learning. These special math journals proved beneficial to students this past year and I would like students to be able to continue to have access to these journals. This year, I was able to obtain use of a SMARTboard and students were really excited and motivated by the new technology that they were able to use in a hands-on manner on a daily basis. With the addition of SMARTboard mathematics software, students will be able to enhance their engagement with mathematics and technology. My classroom will officially become a 21st century classroom.

This project will provide an opportunity for my students to be highly motivated and engaged in learning mathematics in a way that makes them feel as though they are receiving a mathematics education that is on par with their general education peers and is "special" in a positive way.
