My Students

"Math is boring"... "Do we have to take more notes?" My students need a change from pencil/paper and solving problems from the book to something that is more hands-on and inquiry based.

My 6th grade students are part of a low socioeconomic school where EVERY child has free or reduced lunch.

Very few come to my math class with the passion to learn, either because math was always a struggle to them and they've given up or it was a class to memorize facts.

My Project

I want to change how my students look at math - not as a class to continuously solve procedural problems from the book and memorize the rules. I want them to have minds of inquiry and discover math through hands-on tools. I want to challenge them to think differently and to be able to SHOW others how they got an answer and why it's correct, not just because they followed the correct steps using paper/pencil.

These manipulatives are so important to have because since we have adopted the new Common Core Standards for 2014, students need to be exposed to more inquiry based ideas.

The classroom kit includes hands-on materials such as fraction bars, fraction circles, base -ten blocks, and snap cubes to help with a deeper understanding of fractions/decimals/percents, spinners for probability, and anglegs for angles. They will have a fun discovering math and better understanding of math procedures.
