Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My classroom starts off with bell-work, then we go over bell-work, homework, and start a new lesson. My students are often behind in their grade level so getting them to do something other than book-work and worksheets helps their mood and a lot of the times it enhances their understanding.

My students come from low socioeconomic back grounds.

Parents often work late and have more than one job to support their families, a lot of my students also come from broken homes, divorced parents, and some have never met their biological parents. The result from working late or a lot for many parents means that my students help with childcare and around the house. So, homework and school work becomes less important for some students who are in these situations. We have seen that having them create their own game boards or anything that is theirs will give them ownership. Furthermore, a lot of the times it helps with grasping the concept, therefore, their understanding. Some students even come in during lunch to finish their projects. They love having something that is just theirs! Please help me help my students become successful and feel loved and cared for through the creation of their own game board.

My Project

The materials I am requesting will help my students come up with a fantastic game board to help them teach others how to use Integers and Order of Operations. The materials requested include: game pawns, blank dice, blank game cards, blank game board, and sand timers. My students will have the opportunity to create their own game, play it to see if it works, and show other students their game and play it with other students in the school. Students like to have things they can touch and claim and because my students often come from low socioeconomic backgrounds it helps and aides in understanding having their own materials.

The donation to my classroom will help students better understand Integers and Order of Operations.

It will improve their understanding of the content and they will be able to show others how to play the game, therefore, also giving them the opportunity speak in public, gaining public speaking skills.
