This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
"Mathematics is the door and key to the sciences." -13th century empiricist Roger Bacon.
Math truly does open doors which could be the greatest gift my students ever receive. They need to be able to have visual, tactile, and kinesthetic experiences with math.
80% of the students at my school are eligible for free/reduced lunch.
Not a single parent in my class has a college degree and some have less than a high school diploma. They live well below the poverty line and in many cases, there are several families living under one roof. Of my 26 students, one is autistic, three have ADHD, one has Tourette's syndrome and OCD, and two qualify for speech services.
My Project
I would like to make my students see that math is not a big, scary monster but rather their best bet for a successful life. I want my students to learn and have fun in a non-threatening way. Math manipulatives, such as dice, dominoes, and number tiles, will allow them to play math games. Math centers will encourage them to interact with math in a new way, besides the old textbook method that a lot of 5 and 6 year olds are just not ready for.
These children deserve to have a better chance at life than their parents.
For many, school is the only place for academic learning. If they can make the connection in first grade, they will be able to pick up math concepts more easily and perhaps succeed well into the future.
