My Project
My kindergarten class is in need of math manipulatives for hands on math activities. Having items in their hands help strengthen number sense and foundational math skills. Such as, breaking apart and putting together, categorizing groups, and comparing numbers. Manipulatives help the numbers become tangible to my students, instead of an abstract concept that is hard to understand. Kindergarten is the beginning of foundational skills. The more students understand the connection between numbers the stronger they will be in higher grades. My goal is to give my students the best advantage in math going forward.
I'm also in need of a document camera so I can model to my students on a larger scale to help keep them engaged in the lesson.
Modeling all activities and tasks is critical for kindergarteners development. It's so much easier for my students to follow along when they can see me complete the work on the paper, read a book aloud, and follow along in their workbooks. I love to show manipulatives under the document camera and model how to use them, so my students put meaning to the tools and know they aren't "just toys." They become confident in how to show numbers, how to put numbers together, and how to take numbers apart. This will all help me teach my students number concepts, more than, less than, equal to, addition and subtraction, and prepare for the next grade level.
