When given free time, most of my students flock to the math centers. They love math but do not yet have the confidence in their own abilities. I want to make sure that their love of math and their confidence in their math abilities continues to grow.
My fourth graders show great enthusiasm for math.
Our math routine starts with review problems on the board and then introducing a new lesson. Students then complete guided practice and some independent practice so I can identify students who need more help and students who have a good understanding of the concept. After identifying students, I put them into groups and we complete math rotations where they work independently at seats, with the teacher in group, and on math centers with a partner or independently. During this time, I get to work with leveled groups so I can help them understand the topic. My students who understand the skill can get enrichment problems for additional challenge, while my students who need more guided practice get that opportunity.
My Project
While our math rotations are great because I get to work with students in small groups at their levels, the downside is that for portions of the class, my students are working and do not have a way of monitoring their understanding or checking their work. By adding in these materials, my students will be able to work more confidently on their own.
The calculators will be used for them to check their independent work they completed. This way if they have a problem wrong, they can try again instead of continuing through the assignment completing them incorrectly.
The Hot-Dots will join the beloved math centers for them to use and get immediate feedback about their answer, also allowing them to try again to get the answer correct instead of just completing the center.
The calculators and Hot-Dots will significantly improve my students confidence in math.
They already love to complete math, but I want them to know that they are successful in math. Seeing and hearing the immediate feedback will help them become more confident with their math abilities.
