This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I absolutely love teaching preteens! Currently, I am teaching Math and Science to two sections of sixth graders in an urban school district.
In each section there is a suggested maximum of 33 students; however, there are some years that I have had more.
Currently for this academic year, I have a total of 56 between both classes. Both classes include a mixture of Special Education students and English language learners (ELL) students.
The range of math abilities amongst my 70 students vary from Kindergarten to 6th grade. Many of my ELL students come directly from countries such as Haiti, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Canada, and Africa. It is rewarding to see the growth in all of my students from the first day of school to the very last day. It can be a challenge to meet the needs (both educational and social) of my students every year but it is a challenge that I welcome!
My Project
Having a Correll Kidney-Shaped Resin Activity Table in our classroom will provide a much needed area for a more personalized math intervention given by the teacher.
Many students enter sixth grade below and even far below our state's required standards for sixth grade, which is a urgent calling to provide math intervention to those students.
The kidney-shaped activity table will allow me to group classmates together and give them an area where I can deliver a more personalized and individualized math intervention.
Math intervention has been proven to help struggling students in skills and content they have yet mastered. The intervention would be given alongside grade level content in a succinct manner. Students would meet with the teacher either daily, or twice to three times a week depending on their need. The group time would be in a smaller group setting to receive the support they so desperately need.
Having this table would make it so much more easier to meet with at least four or more students at a time to deliver the personalized instruction that they need.
