Math. Just the mention of the word can cause groans and sighs filled with disinterest, or questions like 'Why do I have to know this?' or 'When will I ever use this?' Introducing students to the math component of STEM at an early age will ignite their natural curiosity about how things work and provide them a comfort level about their own ability as they advance toward higher learning.
The mathematics of cooking often goes unnoticed, but in reality, there is a large number of math skills involved in baking.
This grant will provide my students with the tools necessary to apply their math learning to real-life activities such as baking cookies or bread. Fractions, multiplying, and dividing - all found in baking- provide just the motivation needed to change those sighs to smiles. The use of baking will inspire our students to look for math in other areas that might also go unnoticed. Geometry in sports, decimals in shopping, and measuring to build a dog house - are all topics of interest to students. This grant provides the springboard to encourage them to look for those math connections in their everyday life.
