My students have a passion in their hearts for discovery and learning. Every minute of every day is a new adventure and a new learning experience for all of my first grade students and for me, too. I love seeing their faces light up as they share their new discoveries with me. Being their teacher brings me so much joy!
My students learn through hands-on experiences.
In my classroom we are always on the go. Student use computer games to help them with math, they work with older students to practice reading skills, and they are able to work independently in centers that focus on various subjects. We also work in a whole group setting every day.
The students in my class come from a variety of backgrounds. Some students come to school with the tools they learned from preschool and some of my students have never been to school before. Their socioeconomic situations are all unique as well. This presents challenges that we work through every day. Each student is on a unique level and has unique needs. I do my best as their teacher to make sure each of their unique needs is being met.
My Project
Math in first grade is exciting! We learn about place value and about the clock. I am looking forward to teaching my students all about these real world skills, but unfortunately I do not have the supplies to provide them with a hands-on experience.
This project will provide my students with the tools to practice real life math skills in a hands-on environment.
Learning to read the clock is exciting, I remember my own elementary experience with my teacher's big yellow clock. We had mini clocks that we would practice matching to our teacher's clock. Sometimes she turned it into a game an we raced to see who could find the correct time first. Now, as a teacher, I cannot wait to play this game with my students. We will use our clocks to practice writing the time and turning the hands of the clock to make a specific time on the hour or the half hour. Your donation will provide my students with the resources to learn to tell time. Putting a physical miniature clock in their hands will be exciting-it will bring math to life!
This project will also supply my students with place value blocks which we will use to model numbers. Students will learn how to turn ten small blocks into one stick of ten, and so on. Being able to see these blocks this way helps students understand that ten is related to other numbers. We will use these to practice place value in a whole group setting as well as in a small group setting.
These materials are important. You can teach math on white board with a presentation and on paper, but there is nothing that compares to teaching math with tangible objects. These supplies will benefit all my students.
