Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am teaching a second grade, special education bilingual class in a high-needs school in the Bronx.
Right now, one of my biggest obstacles (besides reading) is getting the children interested in learning mathematics. Although some of them are proficient in math, they seem to struggle with some basic concepts such as place value, money and time.
I am requesting an "At-my seat math game library" because these games target the specific skill sets that these children are lacking. I have one game - the greater than/lesser than game and just the concept of an alligator that "eats" the bigger number (as in the game), made my students get a 100% on greater/lesser than questions on their math test. I set them up to play 2 at a time at the math center. Before this game, very few of them were grasping the notion of a number being "greater than" another. I am hoping that the other games in this math library are just as effective (along with my teaching from the curriculum and the workbooks we have) in improving their basic math skills.
Please help these children receive a solid foundation in math. Your support will help ensure that these students receive materials that will help them improve skills that they will need throughout their lifetime. Counting money and telling time are two skills that they need to master and the sooner the better. Thank you for your consideration.
