This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach special education at a suburban middle school. I have very diverse learners in my classroom. I teach at a Title I school and my students come from varying backgrounds, home lives, and struggles.

My students have varying disabilities, including learning disabilities, Autism Spectrum disorder, ADHD, behavior disorders, emotional disorders, and visual impairments.

Students in my resource classes are below grade level in math. Math becomes frustrating to them quickly and they don't see the application of their learning.

My Project

For this project, I am looking to grow our math resource cupboard by adding board games and workbooks with real-world math applications.

Building a sense of play around math problems encourages students to engage and collaborate.

The games will help close the gap for students who struggle with math. Games can create a dynamic that can inspire learners to develop skills and competencies as they focus on the activities of the game. Additionally, competition can pique motivation.

Using games as an educational tool provides opportunities for deeper learning. In addition to strengthening their basic math skills, games help teach social-emotional skills like persistence, risk-taking, collaboration, and problem-solving.
