My Students
We have a wonderful 2nd-grade class! They are kind, thoughtful, and love to learn together as a small community. They come to school ready to learn and to brave the new experiences ahead of them. In second grade we have the saying "Practice Makes Better" and we are always practicing our math facts, spelling words, and phonemic awareness. Students work really hard each day with comprehension, phonics, and fluency as they read picture and beginning chapter books. They love to have hands-on experience with numbers and shapes as they focus on math standards.
My Project
Innovation: We love flexible seating in our classroom and stools at the kidney table will help keep students engaged in the material being reviewed during small groups. The math manipulatives will also serve students at the kidney table as we review making a ten with the base ten frames. The other games will be used to reinforce math standards while keeping students interested and engaged.
The totes and organizational tools will help the teacher keep different science standards together in an organized area, which will, in turn, support student learning as all of the needed materials will be in one place including books and science manipulatives.
Needs Assessment: The need for this project includes the Core Standard 2.OA.2 as students practice strategies of counting from 0-20. Fluency of facts is a very important skill to have, and understanding different strategies is very helpful. My students have a need for additional math activities that will help them stay engaged. Flexible seating and organizational tools will help keep the class organized and safe for students. The expected outcome includes support for the teacher and students as hands-on materials are used in math and science.
Sustainability: The materials purchased can be used in years to come as they are manipulatives and can be used over time. The organizational tools will help the classroom as items can be consolidated and free up areas, also noting that the items can be used for many years.
