My project needs funding for math materials for second graders including lesson idea books, manipulatives for symmetry lessons, and educational math games.
Hi! Thanks for checking out my proposal. I teach second grade in Santa Clara. The majority of the students that attend my school perform below grade level and many of them are resource special kids. 66% of the families that attend my school receive free and reduced lunch.
Due to budget cuts we had to revert to half day kindergarten for 2 years. Next year, I will get the first wave of students who essentially have only had a year and a half of schooling. We predict the performance level will be as challenging as ever. I am looking for some math resources that will help my students in the struggling math strands of geometry, number sense, and money. I am asking for some resources to help myself come up with new and exciting lessons (including Marilyn Burns activities). I am also asking for educational math games as well as math literature.
Another item I am excited about are MICA math mirrors, which will help my students understand the concept of symmetry. This is the first year I taught symmetry without them, and my students did not grasp the concept as well as previous years.
With your help, I will be prepared to teach my incoming second graders for the 2007-2008 school year, who will need extra support more than ever!
